No Casinos President John Sowinski made the following statement on the passing of Governor Reubin Askew:
Today Florida lost one of its greatest citizens. Reubin Askew was not just a great Governor, he was a great man and principled public servant. Among his many contributions to our state was that he led the first No Casinos effort in 1978.
On a personal note, Governor Askew was a giant of my childhood — the first Florida Governor whose name I had to memorize for school. Years later I would have the honor of getting to know him personally. Governor Askew took a strong interest in the 1994 No Casinos effort. He came to meetings, made introductions, and would call regularly for updates and to offer encouragement and advice.
Governor Askew was a true gentleman whose love for Florida exceeded any political consideration. God bless Reubin Askew, and grant comfort to his family.
