Closing of Brand New Dania Casino is “Like Deja Vu All Over Again”

On February 22nd, Dania Casino and Jai-Alai reopened after an $85 million investment. The kick-off party featured TV personalities and other celebrities to celebrate the opening. The newly remolded facility features over 500 slot machines, a poker room and a bar and stage for live music performances.

Despite this investment, the saturation of gambling in South Florida seems to have reached a level where even this new facility cannot compete. On Monday, the ownership group, headed by controversial Argentinian businessman Cristobal Lopez, announced it was closing Dania Casino for a year, laying off over 300 employees.

“This kind of over-saturation of gambling is going on in Atlantic City and the northeast and now we are seeing it here in Florida,” said John Sowinski of No Casinos. “It is what they said killed the Revel…and the Showboat…and the Trump Plaza…and the Atlantic Club. As Yogi Berra once said, ‘it’s like Deja Vu all over again.'”
