Atlantic City’s “Grand Closing” Continues
3,000 more jobs will be lost as Taj Mahal to close on December 12

Atlantic City’s “Grand Closing” will continue as the Taj Mahal announced it will close on December 12. Taj Mahal is the fifth casino property to close this year. This closing will mean the elimination of approximately 3,000 jobs.

The Atlantic Club closed on January 13, the Showboat closed on August 31, the Revel closed on September 2 and Trump Plaza closed on September 16.

In all, approximately 11,000 jobs have been eliminated and more than $2 billion in property value have been wiped off the Atlantic City property tax rolls.

“When the casino industry comes to Florida to try and sell us the idea that expanding gambling is good for our future, we should all take a minute to think about the fall of Atlantic City,” said Paul Seago, Executive Director of No Casinos. “We should be working toward real economic development projects that attract high-wage, high-value jobs of the future, not get-rich-quick promises that end in broken promises and broken families.”

“It’s never good when thousands of people lose their jobs, so it is negative right now. But the state realizes that there’s some serious problems there, and I think they’re willing now to step in and help the city out,” says Roger Gros.
